A cluster of mushrooms beside an old stump can appear almost overnight, especially after rain. Fungus from tree stumps is usually a sign that the remaining wood and roots are breaking down, but it can also create a practical problem for the rest of your yard. The stump still occupies space, catches mower blades, and may provide a home for insects while the decay continues below the surface.

For Edmonton-area property owners, the right response depends on the fungus, the stump’s location, and what you plan to do with the space. Not every mushroom means a nearby tree is in immediate danger. Still, leaving a decaying stump in place is rarely the best long-term choice when you want a safe, clean, usable lawn or commercial property.

What Fungus From Tree Stumps Usually Means

Fungi are part of the natural wood-decay process. Their fine, thread-like growth moves through moist wood, gradually softening the stump and root system. The mushrooms or shelf-like growth visible above ground are only the fruiting bodies. Much of the fungal activity may be inside the stump or under the soil, where it cannot be seen.

A freshly cut stump may stay firm for years, while an older one can become soft, hollow, or crumbly. Moisture, shade, stump species, and soil conditions all affect the speed of decay.
